At Discovery, we pride ourselves in being respectful, responsible and safe with empathy. As a school, we have created common expectations based on these principles. These building-wide expectations are posted throughout our school for staff and students to reference.

We also believe it is important to give the opportunity for success to all Wildcats. Our school has dedicated time to teach our expectations, as well as teach lessons around social-emotional health, growth mindset and building school community.

We believe that responsibility, respect, safety and empathy are all qualities that will help our students succeed and, ultimately, create a better world.

The Discovery community has developed common expectations for the purpose of creating a positive culture that allows and facilitates high levels of learning. These expectations are focused on safety, responsibility and respect with empathy. Staff members will be intentional in teaching, modeling and periodically reviewing the common expectations throughout the year. We ask that every student follow these expectations and the Discovery givens:

  • Keep your hands and feet to yourself
  • Use appropriate language and voice level
  • Follow adult directions the first time they are given
  • Help maintain a clean campus
  • Respect personal space and property of others

Our Discovery community shares common academic standards:

  • Identify the triangle of learning within each classroom: learning targets, inquiry questions and global contexts. Know what you’re learning and why you’re learning it.
  • Use a learning guide in each class.
  • Participate in class routines and instruction.
  • Follow all common expectations; learning guide expectations; and school, district and state policies, regulations and laws.
Our students deserve recognition when they do well. This recognition may take the form of a positive comment or one of several special awards given throughout the year. Below is a partial list of those awards:

  • Honor Roll and Principal’s Honor Roll: Those students who earn and maintain a 3.0 or better grade point average for first and second trimester will be invited to celebrate with their families at a special recognition event.
  • Colonel Terry Nelson Award: The Colonel Terry Nelson Award recognizes an exceptional eighth-grade student. Nominees are recognized for their community service, academic achievement and overall citizenship and leadership. This presentation is made the last day of school during the final assembly.
  • CATS, Athletic Core Covenant awards: Given for commitment, attitude, teamwork and sportsmanship each season for each sport.
  • Wildcat Pride: Staff members throughout the building have pride tickets to hand out to students who demonstrate our behavioral expectations of responsibility, respect, safety and empathy.
