Student-athletes must meet high academic and attendance standards in order to participate in after-school sports. Our student-athletes focus on the things that make a difference in their education and their team membership.

Middle school athletics and activities

  • All students in middle school can participate in sports through the district’s no-cut policy.
  • Students may only participate in one sport per season. We are also unable to accommodate outside sports schedules (i.e, Pop Warner, YMCA) that interfere with our practice/competition schedules. This is in accordance with WIAA guidelines.
  • Students cannot practice or participate in competitions until all required forms have been completed and submitted through FamilyID. Students also must have a valid physical to start practice. Families who do not have health insurance may wish to contact the Free Clinic of Southwest Washington. The Free Clinic of SW WA offers free sports physicals for families without insurance or if their insurance does not cover sports physicals. They are offered Monday, Wednesday and Fridays at 8:30am and Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30pm. The appointments are first come, first serve so it is recommended to arrive one hour early. Please have the History Form completed for the doctor and the blank physical form for the Dr to complete.
  • Parents should pick up their children from athletic events or arrange for rides. One-way busing will be used whenever possible.
  • VSAA students are eligible to participate in one Discovery sport per school year in addition to our Discovery Track and Field team. Registration is also through www.familyid.com and VSAA students are required to purchase a Discovery ASB Card in addition to paying the Sports fee.

Discovery Athletics Registration

We are excited to have your student be a part of our Athletic program! The following is information and steps that you will need to take in order to register them for their sport!

  • Register your student at familyid.com/discovery-middle-school. Please complete the registration in full. A partial registration will not be saved. Throughout the school year, you will need to re-register your student if they intend on participating in multiple sports. You will need the following information in order to complete the registration online.
    1. Address and phones numbers for emergency contacts
    2. Student’s primary Doctor’s name and phone number. You may put ‘n/a’ if your student is seen at a clinic and does not have a primary Doctor.
    3. Student’s medical and dental insurance information and policy/group numbers. If you do not have medical and dental insurance, you will need to purchase medical and/or dental through the student accident insurance plan at Myers-Stevens and Toohey.
  • Have a PHYSICAL EXAM completed on your student. The physical exam must be current (within the last 24 months), not expire before the end of the season, be signed by a physician and either uploaded to the registration system or a copy given to the Discovery Business Office. If your student requires medication at school or has a potentially life threatening condition, an ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION FORM must be completed by a doctor and returned to the school. Both the physical exam form and medication forms are available on the Discovery Website or in the Business office.
  • Pay for your student’s $10 ASB Card and $20 Sports Fee. You may pay online at https://fines.vansd.org or in person at the Discovery Business Office. The ASB card is good for the entire school year and only needs to be purchased one time. The $20 sports fee is per sport. If your student is approved for free or reduced lunch benefits, the $20 sports fee is reduced to $10. A signed CONSENT TO SHARE INFORMATION FORM is required to receive the reduction. The reduced fee can not be paid online and must be paid at the Business Office. The Consent form is available on the Discovery Website or in the Business office.
  • Resolve any previous ASB or Sport related fines. Your athlete will not be eligible to compete until all of the previous fines have been resolved. If you need additional time to pay or if you need to establish a payment plan, please contact Mrs. McKay in the Business Office.

REMINDERS:

– If you need assistance with the Family ID website, contact them directly at 1-888-800-5583 ext 1 or at support@familyid.com. For example if you need to reset your password or have difficulty logging in.

  • All ASB fees and fines must be paid in order to compete.
  • Each sport requires a valid ASB card ($10 each school year) and a sport-specific fee of $20. These funds are used to help defray the cost of equipment, cleaning/repair/replacement of uniforms, transportation, officials and other expenses.
  • If your student is approved for Free/Reduced Lunch Benefits and you would like us to reduce the cost of the Sports fee from $20 down to $10, please complete a Consent to Share Information form.
