Around 8:30 a.m. this morning, a staff member discovered an electrical issue in the girls’ locker room. We immediately evacuated the building and called 911. Buses headed to the school were delayed at the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics in order to create access for the Vancouver Fire Department.
The issue was thoroughly investigated by the fire department, who determined that it was caused by a defective part in a heating and cooling unit. District electricians removed the part and are working to repair the unit.
By 8:50 a.m., the fire department determined that it was safe for everyone to re-enter the building and begin the school day on time. Buses arrived at Discovery as soon as the fire department left school grounds.
While there is no ongoing risk to the affected areas, classes and activities that use the locker rooms, gym and classroom outside of the gym will be accommodated in alternate spaces until a new part can be installed and the smell of smoke dissipates.
Safety is a top priority at Discovery. Our staff acted quickly to contact the fire department and resolve the problem.
If you have any questions, please call the school at 360-313-3300.
